Description:
It was in 1888 that construction works commenced on the building that stands today. Local architect W.G. Smith was given the task of design and local builder Ben Toll was given the tender to construct the building (at a cost of 7,000 pounds). Building was scheduled for completion by the 1st of July 1888. "Mr. Toll expects to have the whole of the premises finished before the end of May, and when complete, the new Royal will be one of the Guest hotels in the North" (Northern Miner 17/3/1888). "It is one of the largest and best appointed hotels in the North, and will in a very short time, become one of the most popular houses in town for travellers and visitors" (Northern Miner 29/6/1888). The Royal last served alcohol as licensed premises in December 1948 (last license held by Mrs. Emma Halbert) and has been primarily a provider of private accommodation since then. Since 2004, the Royal Private Hotel has undergone major refurbishment to return the building to its former glory. Today the Royal is a reminder of life as it was back in the early "gold fever" days.
