TimiAlaere is a contemporary Australian womenswear label showcasing eclectic designs inspired by cross-cultural references and incorporating beautiful textiles, artistic prints and modern silhouettes. Made in Melbourne, the label uses only the highest quality fabrics selected seasonally to create easy-to-wear, versatile pieces for a casually stylish aesthetic. Designed by African-born Timi Onduku-Pedley, the Alaere of the name refers to a woman of substance - the universal muse for the label. From her birthplace to her adopted home and on travels to far-flung corners of the globe, Timi draws inspiration from such women: strong, proud and spirited, with a unique sense of style and individual flair. Migrating to Australia in the 90s, Timi studied fashion design in Darwin, receiving a BA in legal studies before she gave in to her passion. Now living in the fashion hub of Melbourne, Timi has created her first collection for SS2012, Afrizine. Afrizine is a ready-to-wear collection featuring free-flowing fabrics, bold, colour-rich prints and hand-illustrated sketches. For this collection, Timi was inspired by the head wraps worn in many cultures, particularly the flamboyant styles worn by African women. Her original hand-illustrated sketches are printed on soft and luxe eco-friendly jersey pieces, with complementing wrap cardigans. Completing the collection are limited-run wax print shorts; no pair is quite alike due to the cutting techniques used during production and the irregular characteristics of wax print textiles.
