Earthdesign was started by myself in 2004 to provide a quality landscape design and consultancy service, primarily around Melbourne's bayside suburbs. Having worked in garden maintenance for many years, I now consider my designs to be eminently practical and cost-effective, as well as being very peaceful and beautiful. My philosophy is a simple one of screening out undesirable views, then creating generous outdoor living spaces looking onto vistas and strong focal points. My projects include rose-gardens, indigenous landscapes, vegetable/fruit gardens, formal gardens, swimming-pools, and gardens with no specific styling. Most gardens have been for private clients, but briefs have also been completed for schools, a church courtyard, and various commercial projects, including plans for Town Planning. A lot of research has gone into selecting plants that will grow well in the Bayside area, or enriching sandy soils and providing supplementary water to suit plants such as fruit trees, vegetables and roses. Whatever plants are selected for a garden, they must grow well, or the garden will never succeed as it might have. Paving, retaining walls and building in the garden are relatively expensive items compared to plants. They are best kept relatively subtle and in keeping with the existing architecture, unless a feature wall and sculpting is designed to stand out and is therefore rendered or painted in a strong colour.
