This can range from learning to read music with proffessional aspirations at one extreme to learning some basic chords for singalongs. Most people just want to have some fun and see where it leads. The complete novice will learn the basics such as choosing a guitar and tuning it. I also like to teach in an accelarated way to fast track lead guitar playing and this simply involves learning 5 scale patterns. This is the true secret to understanding the guitar fretboard and it is not that hard to learn.
