Shiatsu is often perceived as a massage. Although it looks and feels like one, a Shiatsu session can be more easily described as an acupuncture with the thumbs, hands, elbows and knees, instead of needles. Following the same principles of acupuncture, Shiatsu balances the natural flow of energy in the body, known as Qi or Chi or Ki. The treatment happens on a futon on the floor. Sometimes a chair can be used to assist less mobile people. The client wears comfortable clothes on. A Shiatsu session consists of diagnosis (by the palpation of the abdomen), and the application of rhythmic pressure on specific meridians and acupoints. The flow of movement used by the therapist includes stretches of the body and rotation of the limbs besides the pressure. The result is a feel good sensation and the release of blocked energy, usually identified as pain. Some conditions helped by Shiatsu include anxiety, depression, back pain, poor digestion, bloating, fatigue, pre-menstrual syndrome, migraines and insomnia.
