Wondering about whether you "need" counselling can be pretty stressful in itself. Debbie's approach to counselling is that while there's some talking, counselling is also about becoming aware of how you're thinking and feeling, how that's affecting your life - & being helped to do that in a safe way. When you've developed an awareness it becomes easier to problem-solve - if that's what you want to do - & a counsellor can help & support you through that process. It's about talking, feeling, thinking, listening and being listened to. Debbie is an experienced counsellor, mental health nurse, parent educator and trainer. She has over 20 years experience working in mental health, with many different kinds of people. She has a special interest in DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) with adults; in working with adoptive parents and foster carers; & with children with attachment &/or trauma problems. She regularly runs parenting classes - the "Tuning in to Kids" program - at the Lotus Centre in Harbord. TIK is a new program based on emotional intelligence, teaching parents parents & carers how to better understand their children & to help their children begin to understand & regulate their emotions. TIK was developed at the University of Melbourne, & has been very soundly researched (see www.tuningintokids.org.au). Debbie is a Mental Health Nurse (credentialed); she has a Master of Social Health and a Graduate Diploma of Counselling. She has also trained with Dan Hughes in DDP, and is a Drumbeat trainer. Debbie also works with the Victorian child welfare organisation, OzChild. Her rooms are at the Lotus Centre in Harbord (Freshwater), NSW.
