I am the Vice President of the Australian Association of Smoking Cessation Professionals, Australias peak body for experts in the field of smoking cessation, and I have worked with smokers for 30 years The best way to quit is with counselling to break the smoking habit as well as stop-smoking medication to ease smoking urges and withdrawal symptoms (irritability, insomnia etc). Together we plan a program suited to your needs and and I will then support you for as long as it takes to quit. I cannot guarantee success at the first attempt, but I can give you the best possible chance of quitting. If one treatment doesn't work for you, we will try something else that may work better for you. I graduated as a doctor from the University of Sydney in 1976 with honours and worked for many years as a general practitioner. I have been actively involved in smoking research and in teaching health professionals how to help smokers quit. I now work exclusively as a Tobacco Treatment Specialist. I currently teach in the Nicotine Dependence course at the University of Sydney. My fees can be rebated from Medicare and only a modest gap is payable.
